The First Visit

One evening, at your kitchen table.

Most people are carrying more information about their own health than anyone has ever sat down and explained to them.

Is anything quietly going wrong?

You're holding more information about your own health than anyone has ever sat down and read.

  • Blood tests from a work medical.
  • A private health check somebody bought you as a present.
  • A hospital letter with one sentence in it you never quite understood.
  • Two years of sleep and heart rate data on your wrist.
  • Your GP record, which you can now open yourself in the NHS App.
  • A family history you know matters, which nobody has ever asked you about properly.

Your NHS GP has seen almost none of it, and that isn't a criticism of them. Ten minutes is the part everyone talks about, and it isn't the whole problem. One GP carries a list of a couple of thousand people. Nobody holds two thousand histories in their head and reads a folder as well.

So it sits there, and the question sits with it.

The First Visit is where that question gets answered.

Knowing costs you an evening. Wondering can go on for years.

An evening, in your own home.

  • I come to youAllow a couple of hours, because how long it takes depends on how much you bring. There's nothing to book, nowhere to drive to, no fasting and no blood tests.
  • Bring everything you've gotResults, letters, reports, scans, and whatever your watch has been recording. I read all of it with you, out loud.
  • A full historyTaken properly, which is the part general practice no longer has room for.
  • Three measurementsBlood pressure, height and waist circumference. Between them they say more about your cardiometabolic risk than your weight does.
  • Your medicines and your family historyGone through together, and your family history mapped properly, because that is what decides which screening actually applies to you.
  • A screening auditRun against the schedule I keep for my own members. What you are entitled to, what you have missed, and what the NHS does not offer that your history says you should think about.
  • Then you keep itI write it as we go, so you leave the evening holding it: what looks fine, what is worth watching, what needs doing, and the first step for each one.

It tells you whether there is a question. The Assessment answers it.

The First Visit works with what already exists. Beyond blood pressure, height and waist there is no panel and no full physical, so what it gives you is a clear read on what you are already carrying and whether any of it needs looking at properly.

When something does, that is the Assessment: half a day, the full panel, and a written plan for the next ten years. And when you want a doctor watching it year on year, that is membership.

£550 for one adult. £750 for two.

Go on to the Assessment or straight into membership and the fee comes off in full, so the evening has cost you nothing. Stop here and you keep the summary, which was the point of it anyway.

Beyond about an hour's drive from me a travel charge is agreed before anything is booked.

I'm Ben Ingram.

I'm an NHS GP partner in Kent, and alongside that I look after fifty adults privately. Not fifty one. That number is what lets me hold someone's whole history in my head and still answer the phone when they call.
